Judges.
Jerome Valdez
Head of Design, Cova Software
A seasoned UX designer and instructor with over two decades of experience in the field. He has been teaching at Capilano University in the IDEA design program for more than ten years, mentoring and guiding aspiring designers towards success. His professional portfolio can be viewed on his LinkedIn profile, which showcases his proficiency in designing user-centered interfaces.Currently, Jerome holds the position of Head of Design at Cova Software, a company that specializes in creating Point of Sale software for the cannabis retail industry. He has been instrumental in driving the company's design strategy, working closely with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality solutions that meet the evolving needs of the industry. Aside from his work, Jerome is passionate about cycling and has been riding and racing bikes since he was 15 years old. In his spare time, he is also the creator of Design Habits, a project that focuses on sharing insights and lessons learned from his years of experience as a working designer, leader, and educator.
Ernest Barron
Product Development Team, Willowtree
A dedicated professional in design and product management,with over seven years of experience contributing to thedevelopment of digital products. His background as a designer and mobile developer has helped him refine his skills in combining technical proficiency with engaging user Experiences. Working across various industries, Ernest has primarily focused on financial technology. His collaborative approach has been valuable to companies such as Neo Financial in Canada, YellowPepper (acquired by Visa), and Coinbase. Presently, Ernest is part of the product development team at WillowTree, where he cooperates with B2C clients in the evolving streaming space. Ernest's attention to detail and consistent pursuit of knowledge in design and product management makes him a respected figure in his field. He remains committed to creating user experiences that are both functional and aesthetically appealing.
Gillian Russell
Assistant Professor, SIAT
An Assistant Professor in design at Simon Fraser University’s School of Interactive Arts and Technology, Vancouver, Canada. Working at the intersection of critical design, anthropological futures, and narrative environments, her work investigates the unique cultural, ethical and critical challenges posed by digital technologies, focusing on ways to re-shape technology through value-based imagination. Her work has been featured at the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, Lisbon, in the Porto Design Biennale, Helsinki Design Museum, Design Museum London, London Design Festival, Milan Furniture Fair and the Victoria & Albert Museum. She holds a PhD in Design Products/Design History (2017) from the Royal College of Art, London, and was a SSHRC post-doctoral fellow at the Digital Democracies Institute, SFU. Gillian is co-director of the Imaginative Methods Lab, an international working group developing practices and tools for transformational futuring.
Derek Brameyer
General Manager, WillowTree
Derek is the General Manager for WillowTree's Vancouver office, which sounds like a Save-On-Foods, but that couldn't be further from the truth. He joined WillowTree as an Android engineer 12 years ago and has been in engineering and people management for the past 6 years. Derek moved to Vancouver a year ago to find the first ever West Coast and Canadian office downtown. In his career at WT, he's been involved in the design and development of dozens of award-winning digital products, has helped start two new offices, and helped strengthen the team's culture, growing from 10 people to 1000+. In Derek's free time, he loves watching his 4-month-old kiddo grow up with his wife, Rebekah, and their dog, Bucket. He also have an ever-expanding Lego collection that shows no signs of stopping.
Erin Beaudoin
Product Designer, IBM & All Purpose
A multi-disciplinary designer and upper-year IAT student with 5 years of industry experience. She has built an impressive career while still being in school full time, demonstrating her passion for design and her dedication to instant noodles. She is the co-founder of SFU’s largest design club, Tiny Design Society, which she started in an effort to create a low-barrier space for designers to collaborate, share their work, and connect to industry. Erin is currently at All Purpose and IBM where she works as a Product Designer for clients such as Telus and leads projects for IBM’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.
Alina Aristova
Senior Product Designer, Unity
A Senior Product Designer with over 8 years of professional experience, Alina has developed a keen eye for balancing function and emotion in their designs. They possess a unique ability to create designs that are not only visually appealing but also filled with meaning and purpose, providing simple solutions to complex problems. With a track record of creating exceptional product designs, she has honed their skills in delivering designs that prioritize both form and function, resulting in a seamless user experience. Her creative approach to problem-solving is evident in her designs, which are intuitive and easy to use, with an emphasis on meeting the needs of the end-user. Overall, Alina is a highly skilled and experienced professional with a passion for creating designs that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also meaningful and functional, ensuring that the end-users have a seamless experience with the products they interact with.
